Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant was the world's first nuclear power station to supply electricity to a power system.

It began operating on 27 June 1954 in Obninsk, Kaluga Region. Its capacity was 5 MW, modest by today's standards but a technological breakthrough that helped establish civilian nuclear energy.

The Soviet Union became the first country to operate a nuclear power plant supplying a grid. This marked a turning point in global energy history and helped shape subsequent technological development.

What became of the plant?

It ceased operations in 2002 after 48 years in service. Today, the facility serves as a museum and research site where nuclear energy specialists continue to work. The building is a historical monument, while Obninsk is recognised as Russia's first science city.
