Remarkable Sites and Facts from Russia's Energy History

Russia has extensive natural resources and diverse energy infrastructure. Here are two historical examples illustrating its electricity sector.

An early model of an interconnected power system

On March 28, 1913, the Pyatigorsk thermal power plant and the Bely Ugol hydropower plant began operating in parallel.

The two facilities were linked by a 21 km, 8 kV transmission line. Their parallel operation helped inform the later GOELRO electrification plan.

Moscow's oldest power station

Power Station No. 1, described in the original article as Moscow's oldest, was built by order of Alexander III to supply electricity for the first trams.

The publication states that the facility remains operational and supplies sites including the Kremlin, the State Duma, Lubyanka Square, and the metro, and that it is protected by UNESCO.
