AI in Power Engineering: Global Trends and Prospects

According to research cited in the publication by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the European Patent Office (EPO), patents related to integrating AI into electricity networks have increased sixfold in recent years, particularly in the United States and China.

In Russia, Ministry of Energy figures cited in the article suggest that the share of fuel and energy companies using AI rose from 29% in 2021 to 58% in 2024. Forecasts referenced in the publication suggest that sector digitalisation could exceed 70% by 2027.

AI applications in power engineering include identifying equipment faults, assessing transmission line conditions and preventing unauthorised access to critical facilities. In the coming years, increasingly autonomous power systems may use AI for grid control, load balancing and loss reduction.

Intelligent algorithms are expected to play an important role in improving the resilience, reliability, security and efficiency of future energy systems.
