AI and Engineers: Alexandra Khalyasmaa on Collaboration

Artificial intelligence is already changing industry. It helps companies analyse large datasets, monitor equipment condition, anticipate potential faults and improve operational efficiency.

But will it replace engineers entirely? Probably not.

In an interview with Kapital Strany, Alexandra Khalyasmaa, Director of UrFU's Artificial Intelligence Research Centre and Head of the Power Engineering Digital Twins Laboratory at the Ural Power Engineering Institute, explained why effective solutions emerge when people and AI work together rather than in isolation.

'Collaboration remains the most effective approach. Artificial intelligence analyses data and suggests possible solutions, while an engineer evaluates the situation, considers the specific characteristics of the facility and makes the final decision,' Khalyasmaa said.

That is how AI is used in real power engineering: not as a magic button, but as a tool for identifying risks faster, assessing equipment condition more accurately and making better-informed decisions.

The interview argues that AI's future lies in augmenting people's capabilities, not replacing them.
