A little background on the holiday:

The holiday was established at the International Socialist Congress in Paris in 1889 and was originally known as International Workers' Solidarity Day. It commemorated Chicago workers who demonstrated on 1 May 1886 to demand an eight-hour working day.

Over time, the holiday became associated with the struggle for workers' rights and social justice. Its traditions differ between countries. In Russia, it is celebrated as Spring and Labour Day.
