Noor Ouarzazate: Concentrated Solar Power and Heat Storage

Near the Sahara Desert in Morocco stands the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex, an unusual energy facility with a capacity of approximately 510 MW. One of its distinguishing features is that it does not rely solely on photovoltaic panels.

Part of the complex uses concentrated solar power: thousands of mirrors concentrate sunlight onto specialised receivers. The resulting heat warms a heat-transfer medium, which is used to generate electricity through a turbine-generator system.

Its thermal energy storage system is particularly noteworthy.

Specialised heat-storage materials allow the plant to store thermal energy during the day and use it later, enabling electricity generation to continue after sunset.

Such facilities show how modern energy systems are evolving: the challenge is not only producing energy, but also coordinating generation, storage and distribution within an integrated system.
