High-Voltage Engineering Laboratory: Research Overview

The Ural Power Engineering Institute is home to the high-voltage testing laboratory named after Mikhail Mironovich Akodis, the first head of the Department of High Voltage Engineering.

The laboratory provides practical classes covering a wide range of high-voltage experiments and investigations.

Its facilities can also support the following research and experimental activities:

– measuring the dielectric strength of air under direct and alternating voltages;

– studying electrical discharges in air along the surface of a solid dielectric;

– testing insulation at power-frequency high voltage;

– examining power-frequency voltage distribution across insulator strings and composite insulation;

– testing the impulse withstand strength of insulation;

– determining insulation volt–time characteristics;

– identifying the protection zone of lightning rods;

– generating and studying chopped-wave impulses;

– investigating the impulse withstand strength of parallel insulation gaps;

– investigating the mechanical characteristics of 35 kV gas-insulated switchgear.
