Energy Systems of the Urals: Regional Characteristics

The Urals has one of Russia's largest and most complex energy systems, bringing together a long tradition of heavy industry and contemporary sustainable development technologies.

Coal and natural gas remain important sources of energy, providing reliable supplies to metallurgy, mechanical engineering and urban infrastructure.

Although renewables do not yet dominate the regional energy mix, several projects have been implemented:

• three solar power plants with a combined capacity of 37.9 MW were commissioned in the Arti District of Sverdlovsk Region, with Hevel as a principal investor;

• UrFU has implemented an experimental building-integrated photovoltaic system covering 300 m² and rated at up to 70–100 kW. It supplies building lighting and serves as an educational and research facility.
