Student Research Through an Alumna's Eyes: Alina Stepanova

When and how did you become involved in university research?

I started in my third year. During my second year, I enjoyed solving challenging electrical engineering problems for academic competitions, so I approached my lecturers to find something new and interesting to work on.

Was it difficult to combine research with your studies?

It depended on the time of year. During examination periods, it was almost impossible; at the beginning of a semester, it was manageable. The key is to minimise procrastination and choose a topic that interests you.

Was it worthwhile? What benefits does research offer students?

Absolutely—especially when you see the results of your work or receive scholarships. Most importantly, find a good team. I was lucky.

Has the experience helped you in your subsequent career?

My research was related to my day-to-day responsibilities at Prosoft-Systems, where I had worked since my fourth year. I believe the experience was worthwhile.
