Digital Technologies in the Energy Sector

This course introduces the IEC 61850 standard and brings together the technologies underpinning the operation of digital energy facilities.

In particular, the module explains the overall concept of a substation information model, describes the specialised configuration language used to represent a substation under IEC 61850 and develops practical skills in establishing interoperability between devices that implement the standard.

Practical sessions teach students to configure equipment for communication among digital substation components.
