Memory and Study Skills: Practical Learning Strategies
Some people seem to have a naturally good memory, but the belief that memory cannot be improved is mistaken.
Just as physical abilities can benefit from practice, memory skills can be developed through regular activity.
Engaging several senses may help with learning: visual, auditory, tactile, smell and taste cues can all be associated with information. Rewriting material, explaining it in your own words and completing related exercises can also support retention.
To make memorisation more intentional, consider these principles:
• Take an active approach to learning rather than leaving retention to chance.
• Practise memory-related exercises.
• Look after your general wellbeing: balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep and avoiding harmful habits and excessive stress can support learning alongside specific study techniques.
